About the Committee

Following a charge from Mark Gorenberg, Chair of the MIT Corporation, and President Kornbluth, the Risk and Audit Committee of the Corporation (RAC) has reviewed the student disciplinary process, identified some concerns and challenges, and made recommendations with the aim of responding to these challenges. The Working Group on Student Discipline, reporting to the chair of the faculty, will use the parts of the RAC report relating to faculty governance as initial input. It will engage with RAC, and with the COD, faculty governance, student leaders, and the administration to understand the challenges identified in the report and consider its recommendations in relation both to challenges identified by RAC and those identified by faculty governance — including the COD and its staff — and other stakeholders. (As appropriate, these may include how triage is conducted, best practices for avoiding racial/ethnic bias, and consistency of procedures and sanctions with the educational mission of the disciplinary process).

The working group should engage with the Division of Student Life (DSL), the Office of the General Counsel (OGC), and the Institute Discrimination & Harassment Response Office (IDHR) as needed to understand the whole system within which the COD operates. The working group will make recommendations responsive to the challenges identified by RAC and those identified by governance (including COD) and other stakeholders and, if appropriate, propose an implementation plan for each.

Following the Institute Faculty meeting on October 16, 2024, the charge was broadened to look at all aspects of the faculty-led student discipline system, including examining any potential bias.
